The Pratt&Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp ("double wasp") is an air cooled twin-piston 18-cylinder radial engine with a displacement of 46,000 cc (equivalent to 2800 cubic inches, hence its name) of the long-lived Wasp family. The R-2800 is considered one of the best radial piston engines ever designed, and was widely used in many of the major US aircraft during and after World War II. During the war years, Pratt & Whitney continued the development of new ideas to improve this already powerful engine, the most notable being the injection of water to obtain emergency power in combat.
